Project proposal description to apply for the Wellness Foundation
The community-based health promotion program we are proposing to improve the physical and mental health of youth and support parents and communities in raising resilient youth is providing peer-to-peer mentorship to youth and resources and support to youth, parents, and teachers. Our program is aimed at helping vulnerable youth in high school between the ages of 14 and 19 who may be at risk for psychological, social, and behavioral problems due to their living conditions, stigma, discrimination, or exclusion. It also targets those who may not have access to quality support and services. This program will occur after school over the school year in the Henry Wisewood High School that serves the southwest communities in Calgary, Alberta. The program activities include providing extensive and ongoing training for mentors, thirty-six mentorship sessions for students, ten education sessions for parents, and six education sessions for teachers. Education, psychology, public health, and mental health specialists and representatives from the local police, Big Brothers and Sisters of Calgary, the YMCA, and City Parks and Recreation will be brought in to provide education, resources, and program activities to support this program. Vulnerable youth will be matched with a high school youth mentor and data evaluation will be collected throughout the program by completing surveys with youth, parents, and teachers. If this program is successful, it could be initiated in other high schools in Calgary.
