Application: Convection current. The solar wind is a stream of mostly protons emitted by the Sun as part of its normal reaction. The particles move at about 500 km/s and, at the Earth orbit, the particle density is about 106 protons per m3. Most of these protons are absorbed in the upper atmosphere and never reach the surface of the Earth.
(a) Taking the radius of the Earth as 6400 Ian and the charge of the proton as 1.6 x 10-19 C, calculate the current intercepting the globe if these charges were not absorbed in the atmosphere.
(b) During a solar Bare, the solar wind becomes much more intense. The velocity increases to 1000 km/s (typical) and the number of particles increases to about 107 protons/m3. Calculate the current intercepting the globe during a solar Bare.
The air-film coefficient at the outside of the insulation may be assumed constant at 2.0 Btu/(h)(ft2)(°F) for all insulation thicknesses
Calculate the ratio of the total flux to the diffusion flux
The gases enter the condenser at 230 °C and leave at 50 °C. The cooling water enters the tubes at 20 °C and leaves at 50 °C. Suggest suitable materials of construction for the shell and the tubes.
The 50-turn coil in the configuration of Figure P12.1.3 is rotated at a constant speed of 300 r/min. The axis of rotation is perpendicular to a uniform magnetic flux density of 0.1 T. The loop has width w = 10 cm and length l = 1 m
What are the advantages of this design compared to the simple Rankine plant? Additional data: The efficiency of both stages in the turbine and of the pump is 80%.
A loaded semi-truck consumes about 10 US gallons of diesel per hour (assuming an average speed of 60 mph) and is driven about 16 hours per day, every day of the year. The density of diesel id 0.85 kg/liter. If 1 barrel of crude oil produces 10..
If it undergoes a reversible, adiabatic expansion to 150 kPa, what is its final temperature and how much work is done?
Check to see that the six outputs (Y0 through Y5) display the number of hours, minutes, and seconds.
Carry out a sensitivity analysis on the adipic acid project described in Example 9.5. Investigate the sensitivity of the 10-year NPV to variation in total fixed capital (-20% to +50%), annual gross profit (-20% to +30%), and project construction s..
What is a Recycle reactor? In some reaction system, it is advantageous to divide the product stream and a partreturned to reactor as recycle to increase the conversion rate. These reactors are calledrecycle reactors.
What can be done to mitigate the effect of tunnelling across gate oxides in integrated microelectronics?
A pressure drop of 0.8 bar is permissible on both streams. Allowance should be made for fouling by including a fouling factor of 0.0003 (W/m2 °C)-1 on the crude stream and 0.0002 (W/m2 °C)-1 on the kerosene stream.
