Problem 10.7: A box is divided into two compartments via a partition. Part A contains a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen in molar ratio N2 : O2 = 2 : 1. The second compartment is three times as big in volume as compartment A and contains pure oxygen. Both compartments are at 1 bar, 300 K, and the entire box is insulated from the surroundings. The partition is removed and the system is allowed to reach equilibrium. a) Calculate the chemical potential of each component before and after the removal of the partition. As reference state, use the pure components at 1 bar, 300 K. b) Calculate the fugacity of each component before and after the removal of the partition. You may assume the components and their mixtures to be in the ideal-gas state at the pressures and temperatures of this problem. Is this a reasonable assumption?
If the generated emfs are 200 and 210 V, respectively, determine the load voltage and the armature current of each machine.
It is known that carbon from a living organism has a decay rate of 15decays=min g and that 14C has a half-life of 5730 years = 3:01 109 min. Find the age of the skeleton.
Steam at 100°C is passed into a condenser at a rate of 500 kg/h and leaves as water at 60°C. If the condenser is supplied with cooling water which enters at 20°C and leaves at 40°C, calculate:- how much heat per hour is extracted from the steam.
Determine the reactive kVA of the motor, and the overall power factor of the motor and the load.
Determine the motor current and speed when the diverter-circuit resistance is made equal to the series-field resistance. Neglect saturation and the voltage drops across the series- field resistance as well as the armature resistance.
Develop the four equations and describe the meaning of each term.
The blower-motor combination used at the gas inlet has an overall efficiency of 50 percent. Estimate the power cost per 8000 operating hours for forcing the air through the packing if the cost of power is $0.08 per kilowatt hour.
If a 500-hp, 90% efficient synchronous motor, operating at full load and 0.8 leading power factor, is added instead of the capacitor in part (a), calculate the resulting power factor.
