Polychloroprene is an amorphous polymer used in o-rings due to its excellent chemical resistance and has recently been used as an iPod holder. It is known by the trade name neoprene. It has the same mer structure as polybutadiene except that one of the hydrogens next to the double bond is replaced by a chlorine atom. It has a molecular weight of 200,000 g/mol, density of 1.23 g/cc, Tg = -75°C, and Tm = 120°C.
a) Calculate how many chlorine atoms will be in an average neoprene chain?
b) Sketch the bonding between polychloroprene chains due to sulfur linkages as neoprene is vulcanized into an elastomer.
c) You decide to go swimming in Bear Lake in late November using a neoprene wet suit. Calculate the difference in viscosity (in Pa-s) between the inside and the outside of the wet suit if the water temperature is 5°C and your well-insulated wet suit keeps your body at 37°C.
Why don't we assume that there is an unknown moment about B? It the solution it only shows a horizontal force at B. And is there a reason why the horizontal force at B is labeled By?
Consider a cantilever mass-less beam subjected to a concentrated mass at the tip of the beam. Assume, length L, flexural stiffness EI, and mass m.
The stationary disk, of 300 mm radius, is attached to a pin support at D. The disk is held in place by the brake ABC in contact with the disk at C. The hydraulic actuator BE exerts a horizontal 400 N force on the brake at B.
Vehicles begin to arrive at a toll booth at eight vehicles per minute from 9 A.M. to 10 A.M. The booth opens at 9:10 A.M. and services at a rate of ten vehicles per minute until 9:40 A.M. From 9:40 A.M. until 10 A.M.
how long would it take a layer of this clay 5m thick to reach the same degree of consolidation under the same stress and drainage conditions. how long would it take the layer to reach 30% consolidation.
A dye streak was started at a point in the flow field at time t=0, and the path of a particle in the fluid was also traced from that same point starting at the same time. Draw the streakline, pathline of the particle, and streamlines at time t=10s..
A solid steel bar of diameter 30 mm is enclosed by a steel tube of outer diameter 45 mm and inner diameter 36 mm. Both bar and tube are held rigidly at end A and joined securely to a rigid plate at end B. The composite bar, which is 500 mm long, is t..
Suppose the utility encourages its customers to replace their 75-W incandescents with 18-W compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) that produce the same amount of light. Over the 10,000-hr lifetime of a single CFL,
Alkaloids are chemical compounds containing nitrogen that can be produced by plant cells. In an experiment, an insulated closed vessel 1.673 m3 in volume was injected with a dilute water solution containing two alkaloids: ajmalicine and serpentine..
Write Darcy's equation in 2-D. There are three piezometers in an unconfined sand aquifer as shown below. The head measurements at A = 104.56 ft, B = 104.53 ft, C = 103.42 ft. The rate of recharge here is estimated to be 1.25 ft/yr.
A completely reversible heat engine operates with a source at 1500 R and a sink at 500 R. At what rate must heat be supplied to this engine, in Btu/h, for it to produce 5 hp of power?
