A fellow I know wanted to know the coefficient of friction between steel and commercial carpet. The value was not in the tables of any textbook he had, so he devised an experiment. He had a filing cabinet partially packed with papers and books that weighed, he estimated 150 lbs, because he could lift up one end off the floor, but could not comfortably lift the whole cabinet. The cabinet was on the level floor covered with the carpet. He just pushed on the cabinet starting at the top, going down, and measured the height off the floor where the cabinet stopped tipping and started sliding. He did it pushing on both the wide side and the narrow side of the cabinet. The measurements of the filing cabinet were 54 inches high, 18 inches wide and 26.5 inches deep. When he pushed on the 18 inch wide side, the cabinet started to slide at a height off the floor of 28 inches, when he pushed 26.5 inch side, the cabinet started to slide at a height off the floor of 15.5 inches. Based on these numbers calculate an estimate of the friction coefficient of steel on carpet?
A 25 mm diameter steel cylinder falls under its own weight at a uniform rate of 0.1 m/s inside a tube of slightly larger diameter. Castor oil of viscosity 0.25 N.s/m2 fills the spacing between the tube and the cylinder.
The slope of the channel So=.15% and the Manning n=.038. Estimate the depth y2=100m upstream of a section where the flow depth y1=2.2m Using a) the direct integration method and b) the standard step method.
for sizing the syst em, the mean cell residence time is selected to be 5 days. the reactoer kinetic constants are u max= 2.4 d^-1 (1/day), Ks=75 mg/L as COD, Y=0.4 VSS/g COD and Kd=0.096 d^-1(1/day)
Design a rectangular channel contraction from width b1 (upstream) to width b2 (downstream). Assume uniform flow approaches the contraction (i.e. normal depth approaching the channel contraction).
To remove the solution containing metal from a part after plating the part is commonly rinsed with water. The rinse water is contaminated with metal and must be treated before discharge. The Shiny Metal Plating Co. The plating solution contains 85..
calculate the cracking moment (resisting moment) for an unreinforcedconcrete beam that is 10 in. wide, 16 in. high. assume normal weight concrete with 3000 psi = f prime sub c. use the internal couple method and check with the flexure formula.
It rains 3.0 in. on a 20.0 acre watershed. What is the volume of rainfall excess if 30% of the watershed area is a lake and infiltration on the soil is estimated at 1.0 in. What is the total volume of runoff
Water flows from a ground storage tank that is 450 feet above a town's water distribution system. The pressure at the entrance of the system must be at least 75 psi and the demand is 1350 GPM.
Prepare and tabulate the design aid for partial flow as per the equations for interpolation of velocity and diameter for corresponding flows.
A closed box with horizontal base 6m x 6m and height of 2m is half-filled with water and is accelerated Ax=4.9 m/sec^2 and Ay=-2.4 m/sec. find the pressure at the forward and rear corners along the bottom.
Thirty six year old Johnson was in his last semester of his graduate program in Civil engineering. Father of two small children, he was anxious to get his degree so that he could spend more time with his family.
this cuts it down to a single force that you have to solve for, regardless of what type of member it is. Prove that the forces are equal and that the lines of action are along an angle theta. HINT: Use to do equations of equilibrium.
