Breaking down societal stigma around alcohol use disorders in pregnant women can be a step in the right direction to ending FASD. Many women do not feel safe or confident enough to seek treatment because they do not want to come forward and admit that they drink while pregnant. Societal stigmas that surround alcohol use disorders (AUDs) significantly hinder pregnant women from seeking treatment through fear of judgement, fear of legal consequences, internalized stigma within themselves, lack of trust in the healthcare system and its providers, and fear of rejection/isolation. These factors are serious barriers for many pregnant women and removing them will help end FASD around the country. Pregnant women struggling with AUD often face intense judgement and shame from others, leading to feelings of guilt and fear of being labeled as a "bad mother". "FASD-related health care is laden with ethical issues, such as weighing the rights of a pregnant woman; protecting the health of the fetus; and providing optimal care for individuals with FASD".Consequently, many states in the U.S. have legal consequences in place against pregnant women who admit to alcohol or substance use. These legal consequences could include Child Protective Services action or jail time in.
