Board Development Case Study

Twenty years ago, through a series of mergers of smaller nonprofit organizations with similar missions, Homeless Families First (HFF) became a state-wide nonprofit organization dedicated to finding housing for homeless families. The initial Board of Directors was comprised of members from the merged NPOs; over the course of 20 years the Board's membership changed minimally due, in large part, to the practice of self-appointment. Moreover, the majority of the board resided within a 50-mile radius of HFF's statewide office. With declining revenue and public officials questioning the mission of HFF, the Director, Chair of the Board, and other board members were determined to develop a plan to expand the board in a way to reflect the state's population, infuse the board with new energy, and make a sense of renewed commitment to HFF's mission.

1. What strategies should the board develop to recruit new board members?

2. How will the board imbue new members with the importance of committing time, energy, and money to the organization?
