In some competitive sports individauls in the past have turned to blood doping to improve their performance. One method of blood doping involves induced erythrocythemia. This procedure involves withdrawing one to four units of blood (1 unit = 450 ml) approximately six weeks prior to an athletic event. The blood is spun down to separate the cells from the plasma and then the plasma is reinfused. The cells are stored (usually frozen) until a few days just prior to competition, when they are reinfused. If a hematocrit were to be run immediately following the removal of the blood and the reinfusion of the plasma, would the hematocrit be higher than normal, normal or lower than normal? Explain your answer Six weeks after the blood draw, what do you think the hematocrit of this individual would look like? Would it be higher than normal, normal or lower than normal.
