Helen was having one of those days. Her back pain was unrelenting, and she just wished she could have a few hours when she felt really well again. The last few years had been difficult for her. Her husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and then she was found to have type 2 diabetes. She was also on prednisone for her long-standing asthma. She wished she had not taken up smoking when she was a young woman. She tried to see a doctor regularly, but she lived too far from town and had no medical insurance. She was taking some pain pills, but they rarely really helped. She had pain everywhere, in her muscles and bones, and sleeping was difficult. Her previous physician had told her that bone and joint pain was just a normal part of aging and that she shouldn't worry so much. How could she not worry? The pain was constant. She bought a walker last spring and did her best to take care of her husband and their house, but life was difficult.
