Assistive Technology Case Scenario

Description

Jesse Peterson is a freshman at a small college. Jesse is living on campus and this is the first time he has been away from home for an extended time. He has multiple impairments from birth and has used several assistive technologies to fully participate in school and extracurricular activities. Jesse grew up in a rural area and is now living in a city where he has access to additional supports, but is relying on previous technologies that he used through high school. Jesse has not yet visited any disability support centers on campus or around the city.

Dr. Smith is Jesse's instructor for Chemistry 101. Dr. Smith recently took the Disability Awareness and Support MOOC and as a result, investigated services available on and around campus to support students with disabilities. Dr. Smith read about the Center for Assistive Technology and the services it provides. During the first lab session, Dr. Smith realizes that Jesse is unable to fully participate in the lab despite his attentive nature and interactions with this lab mates. However, Jesse has not yet disclosed his disabilities to Dr. Smith, but they are visually apparent. Dr. Smith thinks there are some adaptations she can make to the lab station (including making it easier for Jesse to reach the beakers and measurement devices) but also observes that the note-taking device Jesse is using seems to have a significant delay and may be out of date. She wonders whether Jesse has visited Disability Services on campus or the Center for Assistive Technology.

After reviewing the Assistive Technology Case Study,

1. What are some accommodations Dr. Smith could make to a standard Chemistry lab station to make it more accessible to all students with disabilities?

2. How might Dr. Smith approach Jesse about assistive technology suggestions?

3. What assistive technologies might Jesse need to use to participate fully in this course?

4. On your campus, how would such accommodations be made or purchased? Would it be Dr. Smith's responsibility
