What are the key historical narratives that frame the so-called "Classic" western film? How do the four films we screened in class exemplify these characteristics? How do you assess the power of these movies to structure historical understandings of the American West?

This assignment asks you to develop a thoughtful response to these questions by putting your interpretations of the films we have watched into conversation with Turner, Blight, Deloria, Benjamin, and McMurtry. (The Squaw Man; Dallas; The Searchers; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).
