In determining the most ethical action in this scenario, I would pick up the other individual's application and place it in the tray with the other applications. Moral principles, relevant consequences, and character virtues guide this choice. This correlates with Aristotle's good virtue theory. Doing the right thing not to gain anything by but due to it being what should be done (Aristotle and Virtue Theory: Crash Course Philosophy #38). Not only this but would be utilitarianism due to the action giving me more happiness than to not place them within the tray (PHILOSOPHY - Ethics: Utilitarianism, Part 1 [HD]). By placing the application in the tray, I ensure that all applicants, including myself, are judged by their qualifications and merits, not by an unfair advantage or disadvantage. Failing to act honestly or hiding the application could lead to guilt, damage to one's professional reputation, and potentially harmful consequences if the deception was discovered. If I were to hide or destroy their application, it would create an unfair advantage for myself, undermining the integrity of the hiring process. This could result in the hiring of a less qualified candidate, which ultimately harms the organization. Providing equal opportunity for all applicants.
