Scenario: From: Cecily Bryant, PA Subject: Additional patient information needed

You are a medical administrative assistant working for a large hospital system with multiple locations and satellite clinics within your state. While you have many responsibilities, a majority of your work involves supporting the billing and insurance department. You are sorting through incoming messages in the EHR secure messaging system. These are two of the messages you encounter:

Message: I saw a patient yesterday (Bridget Besmer, dob 3/14/84) and need to refer for lab testing. I pulled up her chart to review prior lab results, but some test results from the Lake City satellite clinic seem to be missing. Can this information be updated and sent to me directly, please?

From: Damon Banks (patient)

Subject: Insurance won't pay

Message: Hi, I received a bill for a flu vaccination I received several months ago. I called my insurance company, and they said it needs to be recoded. I don't know what that means, and I'm frustrated that I am being told I need to pay for this. My insurance is supposed to cover preventative care like vaccinations. Please tell me how this can be cleared up.
