A population I will likely serve as a nurse educator will be people of color. According to the 2020 United Nations World Immigration Report, there were 272 million immigrants worldwide in 2019, comprising 3.5% of the global population. It can be an extremely hard transition to move to another country with different culture and language, and terrifying to find yourself in need of medical attention with a language barrier. To promote cohabitation of different cultures, it is important that medical professionals are equipped with the cultural knowledge and skills required to meet the needs of these communities, (Chae, Kim, Park 2020) Cultural differences and prejudices can be a source of conflict for both the patient and their nurse. In the healthcare context, this could be managed by identifying the appropriate level of nursing cultural competencies and developing tailored and adequate educational programs. Nurses must provide culturally competent care; therefore, it is crucial to equip nursing students with the necessary knowledge and skills in transcultural nursing care. When I was in nursing school, part of the cultural competence curriculum was preventative health in our own communities. The project was designed to look at the demographic of our community as well as the prevalent diseases affecting this community. I think it was greatly important to not only teach about different cultures but to focus on our own communities and identifying under-represented people within our own communities, which were people of color. Lack of access to primary care physicians within the small towns, created obstacles to providing preventative care. The university created an outreach program to create health fairs within the community to provide education and health screenings for those that may not seek preventative care. I was also able to study abroad and study the differences in healthcare between America and the Spanish health system. We talked heavily about public vs private healthcare and how healthcare is much more accessible in Spain and less so in the States, especially for immigrants. They are much less like to seek medical attention for fear of judgment or negative consequences. This leads to poor quality of life and serious health disparities. It is also imperative to look at our own prejudices and how that may affect the way we deliver care. And keeping in line with Doctrinal Statement of Grand Canyon University, we need to denounce evil and injustice wherever it exists by lovingly ushering in the good news that Christ reconciled the world to Himself. As educators we need to lead by example and lead in abolishing discrimination and prejudices, and strive toward equal access to quality healthcare.
