The Amberssen Specialty Company refers to the chain of 12 retail stores that sell a variety of the imported gift items, cheeses, gourmet chocolates, and wines in the Torontoarea. Amberssen has an IS staff of 3 people who have generated a simple, however effective, information system of networked point-of-sale registers at stores, and a centralized accounting system at company headquar-ters. Harry Hilman, the head of Amberssen’s IS group,has just received the following memo from BillAmberssen, Sales Director (and the son of Amberssen’sfounder):

Harry— It is time Amberssen Specialty launched itself on the Internet. Several of our competitors are already there, selling to customers without the expense of a retail storefront, and we must be there too. I project that we would double or triple our annual revenues by selling our products on Internet. I would like to have this ready by Thanksgiving, in time for the prime holiday gift-shopping season.
