Assignment:

A sample for a specific assay (Assay A) was analyzed in the molecular diagnostic laboratory and was found to have a positive and unusual result. The supervisor of the laboratory asked that the technologist in the sample preparation area extract DNA from any cells remaining on that specimen. The supervisor plans to use a part of the original specimen as a control for assay X. The patient's sample did not originally have testing for assay X ordered on it so no one in the laboratory knows the results of this specimen for assay X. Realizing that the laboratory cannot perform a test on the patient's blood that was not ordered by a physician, the supervisor will make the name anonymous.

Question: Is it ethical for the supervisor to perform test X on this sample when this test was not originally ordered? What happens if the patient produces a positive result that could have serious implications?
