Below is a topographic map of Meadville, PA. In the previous question, you analyzed the flood frequency data for French Creek from a gage station in this area. The flood stages in this area represent water elevations above the gage datum of 1060ft. This means water at a stage of 5 feet would flood to an elevation of 1065ft. Your task is to use the flood frequency information from the previous page and the topographic information from the map to create a risk map for the town. You need to draw a boundary on the map that represents the 20-year floodplain. Every location within the boundary you draw would be at risk of being flooded by French Creek during a 20-year flood.
To do this you can either print a copy the image and work on paper or you can load the image into a drawing application like PowerPoint or Adobe. First, determine the stage of a 20-year food using the frequency curve in the last question. Then calculate the elevation the stage represents (given the gage datum in the text above). Once you know the elevation to which 20-year floodwaters will rise, outline that elevation on the map (helpful hint: your flood boundary will run perfectly parallel to a contour line - it may or may not directly lie on a contour). Once done, you need to upload a copy of the image to the link below. The file should be a JPG, PNG, or PDF format.
Once complete, you would be able to determine which parts of the city were are risk. You would be able to describe the probabilities and you would have the skills to create maps for floods of different magnitudes.
