Ageism is considered a social determinant of health with impacts at least as consistent and significant as racism (Chang et al., 2020). In fact, ageism is associated with over 17 million cases of the eight most expensive health conditions in the United States (Levy, Slade, Chang, Kannoth, & Wang, 2020), with specific impacts on decreased physical and mental health A unique quality of ageism relates to the fact that old age is inevitable for all who live a long life. As such, ageism has been described as a "prejudice against our feared future self" (Nelson, 2005, p. 207). Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to better understand how older adults cope with experiences of ageism and racism through an intersectional lens.
