Question
Adult learning principles are things that all adult learners have in common. According to Malcolm Knowles, andragogy is the art and science of adult learning. Thus, andragogy refers to any form of adult learning (O'Neill, 2020).
The adult learning principles first listed by Malcolm S. Knowles state that adults:
1. Adults are self-directed.
2. Motivation. This principle continually reinforces the need for the process of learning and training and expresses enthusiasm, frequently promoting the adult's overcoming.
3. Action. Provides the opportunity to think, speak, write, and solve problems through the adult learning process.
4. Realism. It delivers many possible examples of nobly associated with the work context.
5. Evaluation. The idea is a mechanism that allows verifying that adults have acquired the knowledge required in their learning.
Adult Learners are Self-Directed.
Adults want to be in control of their actions and their destiny. They want to be passive learners. They won't expect you to want their input. To change this perception, especially initially, you'll have to make it clear to your employees that you value their participation and encourage them to participate in training and other forms of knowledge creation and sharing at work (Dalto, J. 2012).
Adult job training is designed accordingly:
- Remember that trainers help employees guide themselves through the learning process. e.g., Scavenger Hunt.
- When possible, allow employees the freedom to take assigned training activities in the order they want to. For example, the RN orientation pack contains several assignments to complete by the employee only.
- When leading instructor-led training, emphasize discussions, collaborations, and active learning exercises and minimize lecturing- classroom training.
- Provide training that allows employees to use leadership, judgment, and decision-making, which helps employees foster these abilities.
