Question
Homo Naledi is an example of a recent fossil discovery that has generated discussion about where it most likely falls on the hominid phylogeny. Let's pretend you've received an email from a famous anthropologist. She is writing to you because she feels your recent studies of human ancestors will help anthropologists determine the relationship between Homo NalediNaledi and other hominins. She wants to work with you to better understand how H. Naledi relates to other hominins. She has provided you with the below images of H. naledi materials you can use for comparison, from Berger et al. 2015:
The top image shows views of the skull, maxilla (upper jaw), and mandible (lower jaw).
The middle image is a right hand, viewed as if the palm is up on the right side of the image, and as if the palm were facing down on the left side.
The bottom image is afoot, viewed from the top on the upper image, and from the side on the lower image
1. Where on the phylogeny are you hypothesizing H. Naledi should be placed?
2. What is one trait that supports your hypothesis? Explain how this trait supports your hypothesized placement.
3. What is one trait that does not support this placement? Explain why it does not support your hypothesized placement.
4. Suggest a test of your hypothesis: What additional information would you find useful to test whether your hypothesis is correct or incorrect?
