Responsible professional nursing practice requires nurses to "utilise nursing knowledge and complex nursing judgment to assess health needs and provide care, and to advise and support people to manage their health" (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2012 p3). This ability relates to all domains of the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) competencies for Registered Nurses.

This assignment has been designed to help you explore some of the elements of professional responsibility and interpersonal relationships, domains one and three of the Competencies for Registered Nurses (NCNZ, 2012).

Scenario

Thinking about what would be expected as a registered nurse working in a secure dementia care facility, you are planning care for Mrs M who is now in the middle to later stages of dementia.

Mrs M has been calling out for attention. She is wanting to visit her mother who passed away 25 years ago and can often be found at the front door of the secure unit wanting to leave. She is struggling to verbalise her needs, and in addition she has been creating new words and the meaning of these is unclear. Mrs M has been telling other residents and staff they are ‘very ugly' and other residents are becoming frustrated with her. She also often asks for food claiming she is being starved.

Using the context of the scenario discuss what care can be put in place to meet Mrs M's needs in relation to
