A water storage tank located on a larege dairy farm has a storage capacity of 0.1 ML. The average rate of water consumption from this tank is 6.25 kL per day, every day. The farmer refills the tank (overnight) every 14 days, using a pump that takes water from a nearby river. The top of the tank is 53m (vertically) above the level of the river. (Assume g = 9.81 m/s^2).
i) How much water (on average) is used by the farm in fourteen days
ii) How much energy / work is required to refill the tank with this quantity of water from the river (assume no energy losses)
iii) If the pump an piping system has an efficiency of 0.9, what input of power rating is required for the pump to refill the tank in 6 hours
A rectangular channel is to carry 200 cfs. The mean velocity must be greater than 2.5 fps. The channel bottom width should be about twice the channel depth. Find the channel cross section and the required channel slope.
Consider again the proposed water treatment plant for a city of 100,000 people where the maximum daily water usage rate is 99 X 106 L/d. Determine (a) the number of kilograms of chlorine needed per day and (b) the capacity of the contact tank.
What would be the resistance on a level road. What horsepower must be delivered to the wheels on the grade? If the efficiency is 80%, what must be the rated horsepower of the motor.
A 5000 m3/day wastewater treatment plant discharges to a river with a minimum drought flow of 140 m3/min (upstream of outfall) a)What total allowable BOD (kg/day) could be discharged by the plant if the BOD in the river after initial dilution must ..
Estimate the contact time to achieve an effluent concentration of 200 fecal coliforms/100 mL using a Cl2 dose of 3 mg/L if the wastewater temperature is 28 oC. Assume the activation energy (Ea) at pH = 7.4 is 6,500 cal/mole.
why is wood more common in residential construction in the US and concrete more common in commercial construction
A roadway is to be designed on a level terrain. The roadway is 500 ft. Six Cross Sections have been selected at 0 ft, 100 ft, 200 ft, 300 ft, 400 ft, and 500 ft. . The cross sections have areas of 130 ft2, 140 ft2, 70 ft2, 110 ft2, 80 ft2, and 25 ..
Biomass is increasingly used as a fuel to produce power and heat. A sugarcane-? processing mill is powered by a biomass power plant with 140 MW of electricity and with 60 MW of heat in the form of steam for sugar extraction from the cane.
A state legislator wishes to survey residents of her district tosee what proportion of the electorate is aware of her position on using state funds to pay for abortions. a)What sample size is necessary if the 95% Confident Interval
The distance AB is measured as 322.33 ft, the angle at A is measured as 32º15' and the angle B is determined to be 41º30'. Determine the stations of the PC and PT.
Estimate the critical pressure of a mixture of methane and n-hexane if the critical temperature of the mixture is known to be 200 F. Compare your answer with the critical pressures of pure methane and pure n-hexane.
