Question: Your Career Packet will consist of four items; Cover Letter, Resume, Reference page, and a job description. You will need to complete all four items
As discussed and shown in class, use job search engines such as LinkedIn, Career Builder, and Company Websites to search for a job you would like to apply to. You do not have to actually apply to the job, but I suggest applying if you are in search of a job and it interests you. Be sure formatting in your career packet is linear and flows; it does not look unorganized or disruptive.
Possible Job Boards:
1. LinkedIn
2. Career Builder
3. Jobs.com
4. Indeed
Please complete packet in the following order:
Item 1: Cover Letter (1 Page)
Write a 1-Page max Cover Letter to the job you are applying to. This is one of the most important aspects of an application, because it gives the company reasoning to why you are applying to the job and why you think you are fit for this position; something a resume might not be able to do.
Item 2: Resume (1-2 Pages)
You resume is the backbone of your application and can make or break if an employer wants to continue with you for an interview. Make sure your resume consists of the following sections: Contact Information, Objective, Education, and Experience. It is up to you to add any additional items to your resume. Try to add a couple more sections to highlight some additional information about yourself, such as "Honors/Awards," or even "Languages." Be sure formatting is linear/flows; does not look disruptive.
Item 3: References 1 Page
References are great to have in a resume because it tells the employer you have professional people to contact in case they have additional questions about your study habits, work ethics, or even just personal experience. Please include a reference page with at least three contacts.
Item 4: Job Description (1-2 Pages)
Find a job you would like to apply to. Print out the job posting/description from the website you found it on. Be sure to save it as a PDF, photo (JPG), so you can include it in your career packet. It is important to always print out job postings after you apply, in case you receive a call back from the company about your resume. When you apply to multiple jobs, you may forget some important key details for certain jobs. When they are printed and filed away, you can always revert back to the posting.
