Enolate ions

Enolate ions are created by treating aldehydes or ketones along with a base. An α-proton has to be present. Enolate ions can go through a variety of significant reactions that including alkylation and the Aldol reaction.

Alkylation

Treatment of an enolate ion along with an alkyl halide results in a reaction termed as alkylation shown in figure.
