Write a brief note on MMX technology.

MMX (Multimedia extensions) technology adds 57 new types of instructions to the Pentium - 4 microprocessors instruction set. The MMX technology also introduces new common purpose instructions. These new MMX instructions are designed for application as motion video, image processing, combined graphics with video, audio synthesis, telephony, speech synthesis and compression, video conferencing, 3D graphics and 2D graphics. These new instructions operate in parallel along with other operations as the instruction for the arithmetic coprocessor.

 The MMX architecture initiates new packed data types. The data kinds are eight packed, consecutive 8-bit bytes; 4 packed consecutive 16-bit words; as well as two packed, consecutive 32-bit twice words.
