Define Mineral Absorption?
NDOs affect mainly calcium/magnesium absorption and balance. Acidification of colonic contents increases the concentration of ionized minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium, thus favouring passive diffusion. Formation of soluble salts of organic acids and colonic hypertrophy facilitates increased absorption of these minerals. Similar effects have been observed in animals (but not yet in humans) for iron and zinc.
