What is a private IP address?

Private IP addresses are allocated for use on intranets. These addresses are used for internal networks and are not routable on external public networks. These make sure that no conflicts are present between internal networks while at the same time the similar range of private IP addresses are reusable for multiple intranets as they do not "see" each other.
