Due to certain behavior of rivers the problem of gauging then is quit complex. The purpose of river gauging is to stabilize the river channel along a certain alignment with a certain cross section. In most part where the rainfall is concentrated in monsoon period lasting for about 3 months in a year, the river discharge in high floods may very from 50 to 100 times that of normal.
