In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, which prohibited slavery or involuntary servitude. This amendment made the abolition of slavery, which had begun when Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War, the law of the land.
