What are the segments that form the body of the tapeworm called? What is their function?
The body of the tapeworm is made of segments known as proglottids. The proglottids are reproductive structures of the taenia and contain the organs that produce male and female gametes. As the proglottids become distant from the scolex (head) they mature. Mature proglottids can fecundate themselves or neighboring ones and the eggs formed are kept inside them. Proglottids called pregnant proglottids, full of eggs, detach from the body of the worm and are eliminated with the human feces.
