Objectives of heat treatment- 

Cause relief of internal stresses developed while cold working, welding, casting, forging etc.

Harden and strengthen metals.

Better machine ability.

Change grain size.

Soften metals for further working as in wire drawing or cold rolling.

Improve ductility and toughness.
