(a) Discuss the requirements, specifications and special requirements for the  design of arterial road networks and residential area street networks in a developing suburban region of a metropolitan area. Indicate the possible influences of each network type on the other, suggesting how to achieve an overall successful design of the  combined regional road network. How would you assess the success of a given network plan? 

(b) An important part of traffic management is the selection of appropriate traffic control devices at intersections. Describe the situations under which you would consider using: 

(i)  Traffic signals, 

(ii) A roundabout ,

(iii) Major/minor control with a stop sign, and

(iv) Major/minor control with a giveway sign
