Secure some glass jars that hold about half Gallon or two litres of water. Place various handfuls of soil in a jar. Fill the jar with water and then methodically shake up the soil in the water. Let the jar stand for various hours. The heaviest particles will settle out first and the lightest ones last. The layers in the jar after settling will be in the order of the weight of the soil particles. Siphon the water from the jar with a tube. Next study a small sample from each of the layers with a magnifying glass.
