Neuroanatomists Broadmann used a combination of staining and microscopy to map the cytoarcitecture (cell structure\type) of human cerebral cortex. The primary visual cortex is, for example, also known as area 17, and Broca's area straddles Brodmann's areas 44 and 45 in the left hemisphere.
