Such migraine strokes are relatively rare compared with other types, but they are believed to account for a significant proportion of strokes in young people (under 40 years of age), especially women. The immediate cause of these strokes is probably some form of vasospasm-constriction of blood vessels-but the underlying cause of the vasospasm remains a mystery.
