Q. Show the Properties of Elastomer ?

Though elastomeric bearings offer a number of advantages as compared to steel bearings, many failures have been reported pertaining to these bearings. A majority of these failures can be attributed to improper quality of elastomer and/or faulty installation. These two aspects, therefore, need very careful attention by the construction engineer in the field.

The shear modulus of the elastomer depend upon the hardness of the rubber. The relation between shore hardness and shear modulus G.

Therefore with age, hardness increases, which in turn increases the value of 'G'. For the adopted dimension of the elastomeric bearing, the horizontal movement 'δ' reduces with the increase in value of 'G'. Therefore with age, the movement capacity reduces.
