Oxidative phosphorylation is a metabolic pathway which uses energy released through the oxidation of nutrients to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This pathway is almost certainly so pervasive because it is a highly competent way of storing energy, compared to alternative fermentation processes like as glycolysis.
