A commentary on the development of the mass balance, energy balance and process flow sheet for the given design project is required. This commentary should also discuss the health and safety implications of the decisions made as the process was formulated, and evidence should be presented to show that sustainability and the ethical issues have been considered during this part of the design. You should use suitable subheadings for the mass and energy balance sections of your report.

Detailed mass balances of the process to include: overall process block diagram; separate block diagrams for each unit operation; numbered streams and associated tables detailing stream compositions on a mass and percentage basis. Sample hand calculations to show how each flow and composition were determined; spreadsheet programmes used to refine and optimise the mass balances.

Energy balances are to take the same format as the mass balance and should include: Sample hand calculations for each process unit operation; equations and details of the units used with a reasoned argument for their use. If appropriate, simulation packages ( HYSYS, Goal seek, excel) can be used to confirm hand calculations.
