A polymer instance has chain of different type of lengths and hence its molecular mass is all the time expressed as an average on the other hand natural polymer like proteins consist of chain of similar length and therefore they have specific molecular mass.

The atomic volume of a polymer can be illustrated in two ways.

(a) Number average molecular mass (M¯N)

(b) Weight average molecular mass (M¯W)
