A steel plate with dimension shown in sketch (a) below is subjected to P = 150 kN tensile force and M= 300 N-m bending moment. The plate is made of AISI 1080 steel. A hole is to be punched in the center of the plate. What is the maximum diameter of the hole for a safety factor of 2.5. Please provide the maximum principal stresses considering stress concentration due to the hole geometry. Verify the factor of safety using your final decision of the size of hole.
