Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus occurs when the body's immune system destroys beta cells. Beta cells produce insulin, a hormone that helps to move the glucose contained in food into cells throughout the body, which use it for energy. But when the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced, and the glucose stays in the blood. For this reason, patient with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus are given insulin. The patient has to take insulin injection many times in a day and keep monitoring the blood sugar level. Insulin is prescribed by the doctor according to the need by assessing the health status, blood sugar level, lipid profile etc. of the patient.
The concentration of an insulin preparation is always clearly marked on the vial. The cap of the vial may be coloured and the vials may be shaped differently according to the concentration of the insulin. You should carefully read the label of the vial. You should teach all the above points to the patient so that the patient is careful when taking insulin injection.
