However the magistrate is an advocate that who is appointed through the Judicial Service Commission to the post of -

  1. The District Magistrate, and one is
  2. The Resident Magistrate.

Through the passage of time, then he may be promoted to the rank of:as;

  1. The Senior Resident Magistrate,
  2. The Principal Magistrate,
  3. The Senior Principal Magistrate, or
  4. The Chief Magistrate.

Appropriate to historical reasons, there a substantial number of current District Magistrates are "lay magistrates' that who are neither law graduates nor advocates.  Moreover this situation is likely to be reversed in the near future subsequent the implementation in year 1993 of a new scheme of service for the Magistrates and the Judges.
