Impact of changes in diet in the management of diabetes mellitus

Changes in diet are an essential component of comprehensive diabetes care and treatment.  In this section you will understand the components of a balanced diet, food pyramid, food exchange list, concept and goals of diet modification (changes). Changes in diet contribute to good sugar (glycaemic) control, blood pressure and lipid control.

Food plan should be drawn out to include an individual's favorite food items using exchange list. For developing individualized food plan one should keep in mind the concept of balanced diet, food pyramid and food exchanges, food to be avoided and food to be taken freely as advised by the doctor or a dietician
