The first section of a newspaper has 16 pages. Advertisements take up (3)3/8 of the pages. How many pages are not advertisements?

Subtract the number of pages of advertisements from the total number of pages. Use a common denominator of 8 and borrow one whole (8/8) from 16 to do the subtraction.

16-3(3/8) = 15(8/8) -3(3/8) = (12) 5/8
