Local Shear Failure

The local shear mode of failure is characterized by slip zones, small surface heave and a poorly defined maximum loading in a load-settlement curve as in figure demonstrated below:

Tilting of the foundation would not be expected. Local shear failure is usually associated with medium-dense non-cohesive and normally consolidated cohesive soils.
