How Folate is Important For Pregnant Women?

Folate is also important for pregnant women. Low blood levels of folate during pregnancy can cause neural tube defects-anencephaly (a defect in the closure of the neural tube) and spina bifida (a congenital defect in which the spinal column is imperfectly closed so that part of the meninges or spinal cord protrudes, often esulting in hydrocephalus and other neurological disorders). And people with anaemia or at risk of anaemia need to be sure they consume enough folate as well.
