Question

Give a reason that why are high and narrow beams not desirable in concrete piers?

Answer

Supported on past experience in other, high and narrow beams after numerous years of construction showed signs of severe deterioration at bottom of beams. Though, deterioration of pier slabs was not important at what time compared with that of deep beams. Main reason to account for this is due to close proximity of deep beams to the sea level. To pass up these problems, either beamless slab or wide with shallow beams are usually designed.
