Hardware and Software Requirements:
The present versions of CDS/ISIS require the following minimum hardware and software:
i) MS-DOS Version: an IBM PC or Compatible microcomputer with a minimum of 640 K RAM, 2 MB hard disk and a 3 1/2 inch high density D) diskette unit,
ii) UNIX Version : An Intel 386/486 processor, a 31 /2 HD diskette unit, operating System V, release 3 or higher (or SCO), VT 100 or compatible terminals and peripherals like printer,
iii) Windows Version : An Intel Pentium processor, at 16 NIB RAM, 10 MB hard disk space and a 3 1/2 inch HD diskette unit, Windows 3X or Windows 95 operating system.
As a result of a strategic development policy enunciated by Unesco, it was decided to completely rewrite the CDS/ISIS software in C++ in order to provide a common standardised language for all its versions. This effort resulted in reducing maintenance costs of different versions of CDS/ISIS. Also, this helps in the adoption of a multi-platform software development system in order to increase the level of portability to different hardware as well as operating systems. In other words the present change results in the portability level being increased to cover a range of hardware from stand alone PC's to powerful mini-computers. This obviously leads to the implementation of a Client Server architecture using market standard interfaces.
