There are a variety of patterns that could be generates through vibrations inside a string, slinky, or rope. Every pattern corresponds to vibrations that occur at a particular frequency and is called as a harmonic. The lowest probable frequency at which a string could vibrate to form a standing wave pattern is called as the fundamental frequency or the first harmonic. An animation of a string vibrating along with the first harmonic is displays below.
