Explain the types of isomers, Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Q. Explain the types of Isomers?

Ans.

Three types of isomers are chain isomers, position isomers, and functional group isomers:

Chain isomers are isomers which differ in their carbon chains. For example, butane and 2-methylpropane are chain isomers.

Position isomers are isomers which differ in the position of their functional group. For example, 1-butene and 2-butene. (See the diagram above. Notice that the double bond is in a different position for each of the two isomers.)

Functional group isomers are isomers which posses different functional groups. For example, ethanol and methoxymethane (an ether) are examples of functional group isomers. (See the diagram above. Note that ethanol has an -OH group)

In summary, molecules having the same molecular formula but different molecular structures are called isomers.
